Characteristics
A green tree frog endemic to Japan with a bright green back. The belly is white to cream colored. The iris is bright yellow and the pupil is black. The cry is a small voice like "korororo".
Origin of name
Because of the name "Schlegel", it is often thought of as an alien species, but it is endemic to Japan. Its name comes from Dutch zoologist Hermann Schlegel, who named the species.
Differences between the Schlegelian tree frog and the Japanese tree frog
The Schlegel green tree frog and the Japanese tree frog are very similar in appearance and habitat. There is a distinguishing point in appearance, so if you know it, you can distinguish it.
The most obvious is the color around the back of the eye. The Schlegelian tree frog has the same green color as the body to the back of the eye, while the Japanese tree frog has a brown line.
Ecology
Inhabit waterside areas such as forests and paddy fields. catch and eat insects. During the breeding season in spring, the male calls out to attract females. It lays eggs in the soil, wrapped in foam. The hatched tadpoles flow into the waterside with the rain.
Habitat
I found a male in the forest road of Katakura Castle Site Park, Hachioji City. It didn't move at all on the stake, so much so that I doubted it was a real frog. When I observed it nearby, I saw that it was twitching around its throat. There are several ponds in this park, and many tadpoles can be seen, so it may have been an individual that came up to the forest from there.
