Characteristics

A duck with a wide beak. The male has a shiny dark green head and yellow iris. The chest area is pure white, and the belly is light brown. The wing speculum is greyish blue. Females are brown overall.

Ecology

They eat insects, plant seeds, and plankton. They come to Japan in the winter to overwinter. They form flocks of several birds and move around.

Habitat

I found it in a pool on the left bank of the Tama River. About 10 birds were scattered and swimming in a pool full of teal. They were sleeping on the river bank, preening their feathers, and relaxing.
