Like other fish of the Labridae family, it changes sex from female to male.
Females have a dull coloring of brown to reddish brown on the back and a pale light blue belly. In males, the red becomes brighter and green lines appear.
In Honshu, it is commonly seen on reefs, along with the Japanese stingray and the Japanese stingray.
It eats animal food by poking the surface of the rocks.
This species is commonly seen in Araki.
I photographed a young individual foraging around the rocks. It was swimming in shallow waters about 1m deep, without worrying about humans.
