A reddish-brown duck with a bright male head. The iris is brighter red than the feathers. Black from throat to chest. Females are brown from head to chest. The back of the body is gray and the belly is pale. The beak is lead-colored with a whitish band running down the middle.
In winter, they migrate to rivers, lakes, and estuaries. It eats plant seeds and insects. When taking off, make a run-up on the surface of the water before taking off.
It was swimming alone between Tufted Ducks in a pool on the left bank of the Tama River. I spent my time relaxing by grooming the feathers on my chest. No other individuals were found.
