Characteristics
It's chirping loudly in the bushes. It is an invasive species in Japan.
As its Japanese name suggests, the area around its eyes is square and black. It is about the same size or slightly larger than a bulbul. The color of its head is similar to that of the bulbul, but its voice and movements are different.
The base of the tail feathers is slightly light brown.
Ecology
They can be seen in flocks in parks, woodlands, riverbeds, etc. Climb to the ground and forage. It makes a loud noise, and some people say it sounds like the sound of a copy machine.
Habitat
Tama River riverbed
A flock of about 10 birds was singing noisily on the riverbed of the Tama River. Looks like it was attacked by a buzzard.
