Characteristics
It has a distinctive brown body with a light brown belly. The underside of the belly is white.
The beak and eye rings are yellow, and the legs are orange.
It appears to be about the same size as a thrush.
The call of the Akahara
It sings in the forest with a "kyoron kyoron" sound.
Ecology
It is seen in the mountain forests of the plateau as a summer bird, and in winter it comes down to the plains. It catches and eats insects and earthworms. It sings vigorously, and its voice can be heard far away.
Habitat
In a forest in Yamanashi Prefecture
I found it singing in the forest in the morning. It appeared on a side branch, and on closer inspection it had food in its mouth. It had been foraging on the same tree for a while.
