When swimming, it is not so red, unlike its Japanese name. It has yellow fins and a straight stripe from the eye to the tail fin.
Some have a slender silhouette and are just under 40cm in size.
Ecology
They live on coral reefs and prey on animal matter such as crustaceans. They do not swim very quickly, and the individual photographed was swimming slowly on the coral reef.
Habitat
Hachijojima Sokodo Beach
Photographed in the morning at Sokodo Beach. It was swimming slowly on the coral reef and ran away when I got close. In the natural light at a depth of a few meters, it didn't look that red.
