A starling with a gray-brown head and a gray body.
When the wings are spread, they look black or navy blue overall, but the base of the flight feathers is white. The base of the beak is flesh-colored or red and the tip is lead-colored. The legs are orange like those of starlings, and the iris is black to dark brown.
Ecology
They fly to Japan as migratory birds and can be seen in grasslands and farmlands.
They walk on the ground and feed. They sometimes act together with starlings.
Habitat
Farmland on Ishigaki Island
I photographed them perched on a branch near farmland on Ishigaki Island.
Several of them were walking on the ground foraging, and after a while they climbed up onto an artificial structure, looked cautious of their surroundings, and then flew away.
