Characteristics
A small bird characterized by yellow feathers that run vertically on the top of its head. Along with the Wren, it is one of the smallest birds in Japan.
The back of the body is greyish-olive. It has black, yellow and black stripes running vertically on its head, which is the origin of the name "Kikuitadaki(get a chrysanthemum)". The flight feathers are striped in black and white, giving the impression of the feathers of a greenfinch. It has white feathers from its belly to its face, and its sides are pale gray. Black eyes. The beak is rather short.
Ecology
It inhabits coniferous forests and preys on arthropods while moving quickly. At that time, it may hover.
Habitat
Katakura Castle Ruins Park
I found it in the woods next to the shrine in Katakura Castle Ruins Park, Hachioji City. I don't usually see them.
It seemed to be foraging by moving quickly from branch to branch. It also hovered.
