Velvet scoter

Characteristics

The whole body is black, with only the area around the eyes being white. This white area is crescent-shaped, giving it a sharp look. The secondary feathers are white, and are clearly visible when flying. The beak is red, with kelp at the base above. The legs are red.

Ecology

A small number of them are seen in Japan as winter birds. They dive to feed on shellfish.

Habitat

Sanbanze in spring

I found it floating among other ducks from the bank of Sanbanze. It was a little far away and difficult to see, but when it flew off, I could clearly see the distinctive silhouette around its head. After it flew off, it flew off far into the sea.
