Characteristics

The pufferfish is characterized by its angular silhouette like a box. Fins are small relative to body size. The color of the body is yellow and becomes darker as it matures. Males have blue backs. It has blue spots all over its body.

Juvenile boxfish and southern boxfish

Juveniles have yellow bodies with black spots. It looks very similar to juvenile boxfish, but can be distinguished by the fact that the spots are smaller than the eyes.

Ecology

Inhabits shallow reefs and moves alone. It eats crustaceans from reefs. It exudes mucus and venom from the skin. It's not a good swimmer, it feels like it's swimming hard.

Habitat

Miura Peninsula Arasaki

Both adults and juveniles can be seen in Arasaki. Juveniles can be found among the rocks' gazelles. Young fish are cautious and do not come out easily from under rocks or crevices.

Niijima Maehama

It was also seen here and there in Maehama. It was swimming lazily by itself.
