Dhiho's seahorse

Characteristics

A seahorse that can often be seen while diving. There are various colors such as brown and red depending on the individual, and it is thought that all of them are protective colors. The body has a unique S-shaped silhouette and a pointed snout. The tail is longer and narrower, making it easier to wrap around seaweed.

Ecology

It inhabits rocky reefs and preys on small crustaceans and plankton. Males are known to raise their young in pouches on their abdomens. Small newborn individuals can also coil themselves around seaweed.

Kanagawa Prefecture Hayakawa Beach

I photographed a brown individual during diving. It had a pink nose. It swayed with its long tail wrapped around it.
