Characteristics

The weevil is so named because it looks like dried bonito flakes before it is shaved. The surface of the body of about 1 cm is covered with reddish-brown powder, and small holes are lined up in rows. The snout (the so-called weevil's "nose") and legs are lead-colored. The wing tips are slightly curled.

Ecology

It undergoes complete metamorphosis, and adults emerge from spring to summer after pupation. It lives in thickets and eats the leaves of knotweed and other knotweed plants. The reddish-brown powder on the body can be removed by touching.

Habitat

I photographed an individual on a leaf in Katakura Castle Ruins Park, Hachioji City. It was walking slowly and I was able to take a close-up. The katsuobushi-like shape is interesting, but the round black eyes at the base of the snout are also cute.
