Characteristics

A small tiger beetle of about 1 cm. It has a glossy brown or green background with a white stripe extending from the edge. Many sharp hairs grow on the legs and body surface. The black eyes are large, and antennae extend forward from between the eyes. Like other tiger beetles, it has sharp mandibles. It flies around the ground quickly and is also called "Michioshie".

Ecology

It is ferocious and uses its mandibles to catch and eat other insects. It is commonly found in sandy areas with exposed ground, such as cultivated land. Adults emerge from May through summer. Larvae that live in burrows in the ground feed on insects such as ants.

Habitat

I took a picture of it appearing near a field in Katakura Castle Ruins Park, Hachioji City. The color was very similar to the ground, and when I approached without noticing it, it flew several meters away. Depending on how the light hits it, the impression of its body color is quite different. Sometimes it looks green, and sometimes it looks copper. Its body rests on its long legs, and it flies smoothly, giving the impression of floating.
