This bird, a member of the bulbul family, is just under 20 cm in length. As its Japanese name suggests, it has a white head. The forehead and area around the eyes are black. The chest and belly are pale brown. The back is a dark brown with a light green tint.
It makes a loud, squeaking noise.
In Japan, it can be found in the Ryukyu Islands. It perches on power lines and trees near farmland. It sometimes forms flocks.
I photographed them perched on a power line next to farmland. They were perched in pairs, but they didn't seem particularly wary even while I was photographing them. From their silhouette alone, they appeared smaller than a brown-eared bulbul.
