Characteristics

The body of a copper color mixed with a little green is covered with white spots. The silhouette of the abdomen is almost rectangular and the back is flat. It flies with the forewings closed and the hindwings out. The wing noise is fairly loud, and it feels like a large insect is flying. It hurts a lot when you hit it while walking or riding a bicycle.

Ecology

It can be found in wooded areas, green areas, and parks. Commonly found in urban areas. Although it has the name "Hanamuguri", it prefers tree sap. Adults overwinter and breed relatively anywhere if conditions are right. Its shape resembles that of the cannabun, but its habitat and diet are also very similar, so it is thought that they compete with each other.

Habitat

When I was walking along the Asakawa River in Hachioji City, I found an individual flying about knee-high. It was spinning round and round, and I was afraid I would bump into it if I passed, so I waited until it stopped. It perched on the grass, so I got close to it and took a picture.

They can be found almost anywhere, such as in parks or near streetlights at night. Among the beetles we see around us, they have a lively and powerful impression.
