Characteristics

A kind of brown frog. The surface of the body is brown, almost ocher, with blackish brown mixed in some places, and the spots behind the eyes are particularly large. From the chin to the belly there is a continuous dark mottled pattern. Unlike the Japanese brown frog, the dorsal line (two lines running down the back) is slightly concave behind the eyes.

Ecology

They live mainly in forests and can also be found in mountain streams. The individual photographed by the author came up to land from a stream in Hikagezawa, Mt. Takao. eat insects.

Habitat

As I was walking along the stream of Hikagezawa, a frog jumped out of the river toward the shore. Since it did not jump and run away, I was able to photograph it from a distance of about 3m. Once it stopped moving, it stayed still for a while and did not run away even when approached fairly closely. I couldn't hear any squeals.
