Characteristics
It is a rather small dragonfly among red dragonflies. It has a characteristic face, with black spots that look like raised eyebrows. The points that distinguish it from other species are the recurved tail appendages and the color of the base of the wings. The Mayutate Akane has bright red wing bases. Wing veins black. Males have red abdomens.
Inhabits shady wetlands. It is also on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Least Concern.
Habitat
It flew about the iris fields, occasionally resting on the leaves. I took a picture of an individual sitting still on the wooden path. After jumping to a leaf, it would turn back its wings. Various other red dragonflies were flying in Katakura Castle Ruins Park.
