The brown upper wings appear thin, just as their Japanese name suggests.

Characteristics

This long-horned beetle is completely brown and grows to about 6 cm in size.

As its Japanese name suggests, its upper wings appear thin and have vertical stripes. The tips of its wings appear to be slightly open. While similar in color to the Miyamamikamikiri, this species' wing stripes are distinctive.

The mandibles point forward.

Ecology

It can be found from early to late summer. It is nocturnal and is often active at night. It seems to hide in tree holes during the day.

Habitat

Japanese walnut tree on the Tama River embankment

I photographed this individual at the base of a Japanese walnut tree one morning in July. It quickly walked around and then flew away. It landed on the ground nearby, allowing me to observe it. It appeared to be missing a leg.
