Characteristics
A sparrow-sized small bird with a beautiful yellow-green back. The head is black and the cheeks are white. The flight feathers are bluish gray. The belly is white with a vertical band of black feathers running from the chin.
Calls
The great tit's cry is a murky voice called "jukujuku" in addition to the repeated chirping of "tsupi tsupi". During the breeding season, you can often hear them chirping. Tit's voice is easy to understand and has characteristic phrases, so it's perfect for practicing to learn and identify wild bird voices based on their voices.
Ecology
Widely seen in parks with trees, forests, and thickets on riverbeds. It eats insects and spiders on trees. During the breeding season from spring to early summer, they move in pairs while declaring their territory. Outside the breeding season, they move through the trees in small groups of several to ten birds. Sometimes forms flocks with other small birds such as Varied Tit and Long-tailed Tit.
Habitat
I took this photo in March in a park in Hachioji City. As the temperature rises, the number of pairs of titmouses increases. They are often seen in urban areas, and the next day after it rains, they bathe in the water that collects in the rain gutters. It has a strong presence because it has a big voice for a small body. It is a familiar bird that you can almost always see when you go to a park or forest.
