A bird of the pheasant family brought from China in 1919. Males and females are the same color and have a dark brown pattern from the head to the back. Light brown from under the eyes to the throat. The eyebrows and lower throat are gray.
The call is often heard as "chotkoi", but in reality it sounds like "beep" and "kyo". not a loud squeal.
It was introduced as a pet in the early 20th century and released in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Inhabits snow-free grasslands and farmlands. It is omnivorous and eats plant seeds, fruits, and arthropods. Forms flocks from autumn to spring. Breeds from spring to early summer.
It jumped out on the cycling road along the Yudono River in Hachioji City. It came out of the hedge all of a sudden and I almost ran over it. The two frightened foxgloves fled to the hedge, but after watching them for a while, they appeared on the road. It poked the ground and ate something, but was alert and fled.
