Characteristics
A duck with a distinctive dark brown head. The male's head is reddish brown except for the top of the head. It is cream colored from the top of the head to the beak. The chest is slightly light brown, and the body is grayish brown. Females are generally brown or more reddish than other ducks. The beak is whitish gray.
Calls
The male makes a high pitched whistle-like whistle. Cries during the day as well as at night.
Ecology
They live in groups in rivers, lakes, and coasts. It is found at sea more than other ducks. In addition to riparian plants, it also eats insects and mollusks. They are most active in the early morning and evening, and sleep on land during the day.
Habitat
I took a picture of a wigeon walking along the shore of Lake Suwa. They were moving on the sea in dozens of birds, but some of them went up to the land and foraged. They didn't seem to be very wary of humans, so I was able to observe them relatively close.
The sense of distance changes considerably depending on whether it is familiar or not. The individual observed in the southeast of Miura was cautious and ran away even from quite a distance.
