Neoscona scylloides
Abdomen bright green.
Scientific name | Neoscona scylloides |
English name | Neoscona scylloides |
Japanese name | Satsumanomidamashi |
Classification | Arachnida |
Classification details | Araneae Araneidae |
Full length | about 1cm |
Distribution | Honshu and southwards. Also distributed in Taiwan and China. |
Characteristics
A spider with a round green abdomen. It got its name because its abdomen resembles the fruit of the Japanese wax tree (Satsuma fruit). The cephalothorax and ambulatory legs are pale brown with fine hairs.
It can be distinguished from the similar-looking Wakiguro-satsumanomidamashi by the fact that even the sides of its abdomen are green.
Ecology
Mainly seen in summer on flat grasslands and forests. It uses a circular net to catch its prey. It can be found on nearby leaves as well as on nets.
Habitat
Sagamihara Unmori Park
I took this picture on the grass of Unmori Park by the Sakai River. The vivid green abdomen that seemed to be paint was beautiful. Because the abdomen is round, it gives the impression of being stocky.
