Whooper swan

Characteristics

A swan with a long neck on a pure white body. The base of the beak is yellow, and compared to the tundra swan, this yellow part is larger and pointed towards the tip. The legs are lead colored. Juveniles are gray with a whitish bill base. Some individuals have a yellow tinge from the head to the neck.

Ecology

In winter, they fly mainly to the north of the Tohoku region. Found in lakes, rivers and farmlands. They eat plant stems and roots, as well as insects.

Habitat

Farmland in Miyagi Prefecture

Dozens of birds flew to the farmland. It poked its beak into the soil and foraged for food. Juvenile birds and growth were mixed, and after a while other individuals also flew. It looks big and graceful in flight.
