Walks and pauses on the ground on warm days from winter to spring. It is often seen bending its body into a 'く' shape and digging in the ground. It becomes wary when approached within a certain distance and flies away while calling. It may also be perched on branches.
May act alone or in flocks depending on the amount of food available in the vicinity. Other than when in flocks, it gives the impression of being solitary.
The English name "Dusky" means "dark-colored" or "dull," and is derived from the appearance of this species.
Often seen along the Asakawa River in Hachiōji. It is relatively easy to spot because it appears not only in thickets but also in places where short grass grows. Its hopping movements are characteristic, making it easy to distinguish even from a distance. In Asakawa, it is often found not only in grasslands but also on rocky riverbanks.
